Dear John–
I wrote Charles last night & gave him several messages to give you & decided to just write you instead / (It isn't writing the letters that I dislike it's the heat) (my hands stick to the paper it is so hot here)....
The heat is insufferable here – at least for me / But there are some nice aspects of it / It seems to make people more tolerable down here / There are so many sissies here that they call it Gay Haven & they say in the winter is when they really flock down here – gold earrings silk pants & all / also mixing of the races is not frowned on if it is even noticed at all / you see many old black momen with blondhaired little boys but they are not maids or mammys they are the boys grandmothers /
They speak English only here (except in French town) but they speak with a very odd accent / I told Chas. about the spades from the states who try to pass for anything except American Negroes & its funny too because they pick up the accent very well but always bust themselves with words like water, hot, etc. /
The scenery here is beautiful & old tho and one can go swimming in the Caribbean & 15 minutes later (if you have a car) be swimming in the Atlantic /
The skies are purple here at night / & the waters are deceiving / They look calm & beautiful but it is not unusual to hear of a swimmer being caught by a shark or barracuda / The Puerto Ricans say sharks are cowards & you don’t need to be afraid of them – so they say – if you meet one in the water look him in the eye & hit him on the nose & he’ll run /
I’m going to have to speak to my landlord here – I have to pay $5.00 per night for this room & I just saw a mouse run by / and I don’t like mice at all / the mosquitoes, flies & lizards are bad enough but mice in my room – that's just too much /
Another thing – you can walk thru any part of this town alone at night & nobody bothers you at all – & its not the law enforcement because that’s nil (they’re the laziest people on the island) I guess its just too hot /
It is raining outside right now / It rains a lot here but the rains never last for more than 5 or 10 minutes at a time / but it really pours when it starts & there is never any warning /
Right there is a lizard about two inches long crawling on my wall /
…must close for now / my hand is sticking to the paper again / remember –
