Jerry Lubin's Historical (November 4, 2004) Reunion Photo Collection!

Early in the evening on November 4, Karen Dumas (not shown) of the Detroit City Countcil presented an Achievement Award to the Detroit Artists Workshop. This photo was taken downstairs at the Scarab Club, immediately after the presentation. L-R: Howard Weingarden, Robin Eichele, James Semark, Bill Harris, John Sinclair. All are founders of the Workshop.

Here is a duo of Bill Harris portraits, taken in the same time period as the Achievement Award photo, downstairs at the Scarab Club. Bill is active in Detroit literary circles as a poet and a playwright, and has recently premeriered a play of his in St. Louis.

Also downstairs at the Scarab Club: James Semark introduces Judith Semark to Sheri Reysser. Judith's background is from the Trans-Love Ann Arbor commune and Sheri lived in the Castle (Workshop period). Bill Harris is in the foreground and Michael Jernigan looks on.

After the Achievement Award presentation, those founding members who were present were asked to say some words. Here, Howard Weingarden is speaking and you can see a portion of one of his art works in the background.

Later, upstairs in the Scarab Club: John Sinclair is signing books and his partner, Adam Brooke is in the background. This was taken just before the awards were presented -- "Come on, John, it's time for the awards..."

Maryann Mahaffey, president of the Detroit City Council, presented three testimonials to John Sinclair, one signed by Mayor Kwame Fitzpatrick and two signed by all members of the City Council. Behind John is the Ladder (see next photo).

A ritual of the Scarab Club is that guests of honor are invitied to sign a ceiling beam upstairs (the beams contain many V.I.P. signatures including Diego Rivera's). Here, John Sinclair is adding his name to a beam, and you can just barely see some of the other signatures. Holding the ladder, L-R: Brita Brookes, Carl Lundgren, Howard Weingarden, Laura Grimshaw. The November 4 event at the Scarab Club was a welcome reception. So, after the formalities, there was much hanging out. L-R: Rosalind Kass, Sheri Reysser, Jerry Younkins, Leni Sinclair. Rosalind and Sheri have an interview in the movie 20 to Life about John Sinclair.

Here is a duo of M.L. Liebler portraits. ML was very active in organizing the reception, a collaboration between his group (Springfed-Detroit Metro Writers) and the DAW. ML also emceed the November 6 WSU concert and the November 7 closing program, back at the Scarab Club. Aside from his professorship duties in the WSU English Department, ML performs locally with his own group, the Magic Poetry Band.

Trio of Robin Eichele portraits. Robin, currently living in Los angeles, was the prime mover of the Artists Workshop Press in 1964. He is active as a poet and educator.

Jerry Lubin is an excellent documentarian. He was on the scene at our fundraisers and at the welcome reception, November 4. When Jerry was asked about his photos at the reception, he came up wih these wonderful pictures. We look forward to Jerry's bio, appearing here soon. Also, we hope to be able to identify all the characters in Jerry's pics, in the near future.
